PhD position on nanofluidics to quantify localisation and counting accuracy under different chemical conditions (Filled)

3 years full time position at Technical University of Denmark

Two 3-year PhD scholarships are available at DTU Health Tech within the SuperCol project in the groups for “Nanofluidics and Bioimaging” and “Stochastic Systems and Signals”. Starting dates are between July 1 and October 1, 2020. This text is for the project in the first group; please see here for the other position.

SuperCol establishes a unique and well-structured training network with leading R&D labs from European universities and industry within correlative microscopy and colloidal sciences. 15 PhD students will form an interdisciplinary research team that will bridge the gap between various disciplines and unite their research efforts to advance particle-based biomedical applications. The SuperCol project is supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020research and innovation programme Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN) under grant No. 860914.

About the project
Colloidal particles are micro- or nanoscopic particles whose surfaces can be functionalized. Their large surface-to-volume ratio ensures that one can load each one with many molecules to deliver and release drugs or bind pathogens and biomarkers at a target site, opening potential for powerful diagnostic and therapeutic systems. To unlock this potential, however, one needs to combine super-resolution microscopy, colloidal sciences, and advanced modelling to (a) control, (b) visualize and quantify, and (c) rationally design surface-functionality.

You will work towards this goal by designing and applying reliable optical super-resolution methods that can resolve the individual active sites on the particles with nanometer-resolution, which currently is not possible. In this project
you will focus primarily on experiments combining nanofluidics and super-resolution optical microscopy.

The projects will be jointly supervised by Rodolphe Marie, Kim Mortensen, and Henrik Flyvbjerg at DTU Health Tech.

Responsibilities and tasks

As PhD-students in these projects, you will work closely together towards a common goal, but each of you will be responsible for independently carrying your own research project. You will be enrolled in the PhD school at DTU Health Technology and be a part of the ITN SuperCol.

Specifically, as a PhD student in
Project 1, you will be part of the Nanofluidics and Bioimaging group led by Associate Professor Rodolphe Marie. We expect that you:
  • will be responsible for performing single fluorophore microscopy with applications in colloidal sciences and life science.
  • work with laser optics, fluorescence microscopy, quantitative biophysics measurement of single fluorophores and nanoparticles, and possibly prototyping of micro- and nanofluidics devices.
  • apply data analysis methods on your microscopy data in collaboration with the PhD student in Project 2.
  • collaborate with researchers and PhD students working in one industry partner of the ITN, Blusense A/S, based in Denmark.
  • are fluent in English (oral and written).
  • have good collaborative skills and will contribute to the pleasant working environment in the group and in the department.
To be successful in this line of work, we expect that you
  • are enthusiastic and motivated for doing research at the interface between super-resolution microscopy and colloidal sciences.
  • have a solid base in optical physics, microscopy, and/or data analysis with strong analytical skills.
  • have experience with computer programming (Python, MatLab, or similar).
  • are fluent in English (oral and written).
  • have good collaborative skills and will contribute to the pleasant working environment in the group and in the department.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) in physics, nanotechnology, or a related discipline or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

The vacancy is open to candidates who are in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree (Eligibility rule), and who have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your recruitment (Mobility rule).

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by the team of supervisors. Final assessment will be based on an interview.
